What makes McMahon the educator: Navigating Life's Spectrum Through Resilience and Revelation :

My photographic journey is a complex tapestry woven with threads of diverse experiences, deep-seated passions, and a unique family heritage that has profoundly influenced my outlook on the world. Situated within the vibrant landscape of a Russell Group University in the UK, my path was uniquely shaped by my struggle with dyslexia, an educational system ill-equipped to understand its nuances, and a family where religion was a strong, yet harmonious presence.

My mother, a daughter of the Pope, hailed from Dublin, the heart of independent, free Ireland, and her love for the Catholic Church was a defining element of my upbringing. In contrast, my father, short in stature but strong in spirit, was a devout Protestant, a product of the streets of Glasgow. This duality of faith within my family fostered a spirit of tolerance and respect, where the richness of both Catholicism and Protestantism coexisted harmoniously.

My formative years unfolded against the backdrop of the rough yet joyful neighbourhoods of the East End of London. It was here that my dyslexia, a condition not fully understood by the educational system of that time, became increasingly apparent. Up until the age of 13, I could neither read nor write, and I navigated life and education by artful deception. It was a period of both profound struggle and personal growth, as I learned to navigate a world that often classified individuals simplistically as either "clever" or “stupid."

Despite these challenges, my family's wealth was not measured in material possessions but in boundless love and irrepressible humour. This foundation of love and laughter shaped my resilience and instilled in me a profound sense of empathy, a quality that has deeply informed my artistic vision.

My photographic journey spans a diverse range of genres, each reflecting facets of my multifaceted life. I traverse sweeping landscapes, seeking to capture the profound beauty of the natural world. Street photography immerses me in the tapestry of everyday life, where stories unfold in captivating detail. Studio macro photography reveals the intricate magic concealed in the smallest of details. The allure of the mundane beckons, and I celebrate the poetry of the ordinary. Infrared photography, with its hidden treasures of light, invites viewers to perceive reality in a new and transformative way.

Education, both as an educator and a lifelong learner, has remained a cornerstone of my journey. I derive profound satisfaction from inspiring others through my work, nurturing curiosity, and fostering growth. Simultaneously, I remain open to the transformative power of knowledge, continually seeking new horizons in my quest for self-improvement.

My photographic practice encompasses a range of materials and techniques, from the tactile beauty of film photography to the versatile power of modern digital cameras. I embrace a multitude of materials and techniques. The tactile beauty of film photography, from the majestic 5x4 to the evocative 120mm and timeless 35mm, connects me with the roots of this craft. Seamlessly, I navigate the digital realm, wielding the versatile power of Sony, Panasonic, and Canon cameras. This seamless blend of traditional and contemporary technologies allows me to craft visual narratives with a broad and vibrant brushstroke.

Within this multifaceted journey, I am drawn to the enigmatic realms of the infrared and UV spectra. Here, landscapes and details hidden from the naked eye are unveiled, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Beyond the lens, my life is enriched by a diverse range of interests. My family's deep religious roots have instilled in me a profound respect for spirituality in all its forms. Later in life, I chose to embrace a more pagan and Buddhist lifestyle, finding solace and wisdom in these traditions.

As an Arsenal football fan, I celebrate the spirit of competition and camaraderie. Marvel films ignite my imagination, echoing the limitless possibilities of human creativity. My television preferences lean towards documentary programs, reflecting my commitment to storytelling and exploration.

Family remains at the heart of my existence. The laughter and boundless curiosity of my seven grandchildren connect me to the wonder and awe that fuel my artistic vision. Alongside them, my dog leads me on journeys through rural, quiet landscapes, offering moments of respite amidst the serenity of the natural world.

In my photographic endeavours, I invite viewers to embark on a journey with me, transcending the boundaries of light and perception. Each image is a testament to my passion for education, my dedication to the craft, and my unwavering commitment to the spectrum of life, both seen and unseen. It's a journey that embraces the complexity of life, where diverse spiritual influences converge, and where the revelation of my dyslexia, along with the rough but joyful memories of the East End of London, infuse every frame with authenticity and depth. Through the lens, I weave a narrative that reflects the myriad facets of existence, inviting all to join me on this visual expedition.
